The Maasvlakte in the Netherlands was created in the 1960s by reclaiming land from the North Sea through dykes and sand suppletion. Before the completion the Maasvlakte was a sandbank which was hazardous for ships. The Maasvlakte made it possible for Rotterdam to accommodate the biggest ships in the world grow and maintain its position as biggest harbour in the world.
| 4 Lagerwey 30 250 kW wind turbines were placed in 1994 on the first row of dunes after the beach on the Maasvlakte. On this windy spot the turbines produced an average of 700.000 ++ kWh per year. When these turbines were placed they were amongst the biggest turbines available. The turbines are connected directly to the grid. The maintenance of these turbines was done by a dutch wind turbine maintenance expert.
Future: The Maasvlakte is expanding once more and more land is reclaimed to facilitate the growth of the Rotterdam harbour. For this reason, after 16 years of service, this wind park is removed in June 2010.
